    Unfortunately softer species need plastic guards around them to protect them from frost. We have had the same situation with Te Hakari Dune wetland project since 2002. We learnt to protect Puka or Pukanui (Meryta sinclairii (Hook.f.) Seem.) the large-leaved evergreen tree endemic to New Zealand that grows to about 8 m tall, by leaving lupin plants around them. Our planting is more for forest revegetation so we spray, clear weeds and plant within other shrubs, hebes etc that provide protection. Puka should be planted later as they are too exposed in this way above! Arohanui ki a koutou
