Two men are dead following a late night crash on State Highway One near Otaki last night.
Police central communications Inspector Ken Climo said a Ford and a Holden collided at the intersection of State Highway One and Mokena Kohere St at Manakau around 10.50pm last night, causing one of the vehicles to roll.
Police said in a statement it was believed one of the vehicles had crossed the centre line.
The two dead men were the drivers and a 51-year-old female passenger was flown to Palmerston North hospital in a serious condition.
Trains were halted and the highway closed near the accident site, as a railway crossing goes through the intersection where the cars collided.
While I am not a fan of reducing speed limits, the accident over the weekend should seriously consider all available options for this stretch of road.
