Many community members have expressed concern about the dangers of the intersection of Waikawa Beach Road and SH1. Today two cars crashed nearby and blocked the northbound lane of State Highway 1 for about an hour:
Two cars crashed on the highway at Manakau, near the intersection of Waikawa Beach Rd, about 8.40am on Tuesday [30 July 2019], a police spokeswoman said.
A St John spokeswoman said two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were sent and two people were taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate injuries, while a third person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The northbound lane was blocked and a tow truck was called for both cars.

To gauge the public response to reducing speed though this hazardous area I put up a poll on the Horowhenua Expressway discussion group on Facebook. Poll results are about 50/50 but comments support a reduction to 50km/hr With the expressway at least 10 years away we need to address the danger of increasing volume of traffic on the road. Please add your vote to this poll so we can try for a speed reduction while more permanent solution is put in place
