Have you spotted the giant Christmas tree, with lights, in the paddock near the village entrance?
At the AGM Lesley-Ann Walker revealed that it’s in the Walker’s paddock and that thanks are due to David Butel for help with the lights.
Thanks to all!
Update from Lesley-Ann, with additional photo by Cam:
It was my idea the lights but had to be put up with a Cherry picker from This Way Up (our son Cam) and the brains behind the setting up and maintaining it was David Butel from Drake St.
Update from Lesley-Ann 07-Jan-21: tree with low moon and farm tree with moon above, pictures taken by Suzanne Culver.
It’s so interesting what turns up on the beach. An Australian radiosonde, for example. Today a member of the community found a message in a bottle, with thanks to John Brown for the info:
The following note was found in a small bottle by Barry Smith between Waikawa and Ohau Rivers today 4 January 2020.
The position the ship was in is just north east of Gabo Island, off the Australian mainland at the eastern entrance to Bass Strait and was probably on a voyage between Sydney and Melbourne or vice versa. The distance is 2197 kilometers but the bottle probably travelled much more than this in the 15 months.
The note, on Princess Cruises Golden Princess letterhead, reads:
23rd October 2018
Position: South: 37° 51.81
East: 149° 51.94

Two good aerial photos of the village and river.
Thanks to Lesley-Anne Walker for sending in these two photos. Both were taken by Blair Rogers in January 2018, likely using a drone. Thanks Blair and Lesley-Anne.
Can you spot your house?
Click the photos for a very much larger version.
This one looks south, towards the Strathnaver side of Waikawa Beach. The vehicle entrance is at the bottom of the shot and Reay Mackay Grove appears with a few lakes near top left.
This one looks north and show Manga Pirau Street running parallel to the river. Drake and Arthur Streets are at top left, while Waikawa Beach Road snakes off towards the centre top of the image. You can see Duncan Street with Norna Grove coming off Manga Pirau Street low in the photos, while Cathryn Street is about half-way up.
Sarah Street starts parallel to Manga Pirau Street near the top of the image but then diverges as it gets further west. If you look closely at the full-size photo you can make out Sand Dune Grove and Mavis Ave running off Sarah Street in the top half.
We see interesting things at Waikawa Beach.
