Lemon-aid entrepreneur at the footbridge

Charlie Strivens said on Facebook, on Sunday 26 December 2021:

This is Dan. He made this lemon aid cart and is parked by the footbridge car park. It’s good to support the young entrepreneurs so feel free to pop down and support Dan 😀

The 1931 footbridge

A little footbridge trivia: noticed in the Horowhenua District Council building corridor a framed photo of the old Waikawa Beach footbridge with a plaque below.

The old Waikawa Beach footbridge photo and plaque in the Council building.

The plaque reads:

WAIKAWA BEACH FOOTBRIDGE CIRCA 1976
BORN 1931 DIED 13 MARCH 1990
PRESENTED TO HOROWHENUA DISTRICT COUNCIL BY THE WAIKAWA BEACH RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION (INC) IN APPRECIATION OF THEIR GRATEFUL THANKS ON THE OCCASION OF THE OPENING OF THE NEW FOOTBRIDGE 4 JANUARY 1992.

The old Waikawa Beach footbridge plaque detail.

Turns out that bridge lasted almost 60 years. The new bridge has already had some repair and upgrade work but needs a whole rebuild apparently. After 30 years. That work is planned to be carried out within the next few years.

Lost kayaks Sunday 27 June 2021

Have you seen these kayaks?

I was given your details regarding a community email group. A group of us lost three kayaks and paddles up above the Waikawa Reserve DoC campground today. We intend to look for them when the stream is low but in the meantime people may come across them, on the beach or riverside. Would appreciate hearing from anyone if they find them.

Many thanks,
Nigel
