In February 2018 Ex Tropical Cyclone Gita brought the Waikawa river right up to the vehicle entrance, sweeping away sand dunes along the whole stretch at the end of Manga Pirau Street and across the Miratana block.
It removed the slope down to the beach at the vehicle entrance, leaving a sheer drop of between 1 and 2 metres. It also took out numerous plants and grasses.
