Delays and accidents on SH1 between the Ōtaki roundabout and Hokio Beach Road in calendar year 2019

The purpose of this page is to record ‘events’ along SH1 between Ōtaki and Levin, and also nearby, especially through Ōtaki. Several times in 2018 the stretch of road between Waikawa Beach Road and Levin was completely blocked by accidents, several with fatalities. Congestion is an ongoing problem, especially around holidays.

    SH1 OTAKI – SERIOUS CRASH – 4:55 The road is currently CLOSED to southbound traffic who are being detoured via Sth Manakau Rd and Waitohu Valley Rd. Please expect major DELAYS through the area and take extra care. ^IF
    UPDATE 5:05 Northbound queues are now impacting traffic past the Otaki shops. Due to the road being CLOSED southbound and DELAYS please avoid the area and delay your journey if possible. ^IF
    UPDATE 5:25 SH1 Otaki remains CLOSED to southbound traffic from South Manakau Rd. Please continue to avoid the area or expect DELAYS on the detour route and if travelling northbound. Tow is currently en route. ^IF
    FINAL UPDATE 5:55 The SH1 Ōtaki crash has now been CLEARED. Southbound traffic please continue to expect DELAYS while congestion eases from the detour route. There are no delays northbound. Tēnā koe mō tōu manawanui (Thank you for your patience). ^IF

    SH1 MANAKAU TO OHAU – CONGESTION – 1:35 Due to a medical event, the northbound lane is BLOCKED and there are significant delays in both directions. Emergency services and contractors are on site. ^CR
    UPDATE 1:50 Both lanes are now CLEAR on SH1 between Manakau and #Ohau, following a prior medical event. Delays remain but are easing in both directions. ^CR
    UPDATE 2:15 The prior incident on #SH1 south of Ohau is still causing significant northbound DELAYS with queues back to Manakau. Please continue to be patient while the congestion eases. ^IF
    UPDATE 3:10 The #SH1 Manakau to Ohau northbound DELAYS are slowly easing. Please continue to be patient and expect queues north of Manakau. ^IF
    FINAL UPDATE 4 The significant northbound delays north of SH1 Manakau, due to the prior medical event have EASED. However, there is still traffic management in place for the event north of Kuku Beach Rd. Thank you for your patience. ^IF

    SH1 MANAKAU, MANAWATU-WANGANUI – SERIOUS CRASH – 9:05 There is a serious crash that is BLOCKING the northbound lane near Waikawa Beach Rd. Contractors are on-site and all emergency services en route. Please expect significant DELAYS and delay travel if possible. ^IF
    UPDATE 9:40 The crash continues to BLOCK northbound. A tow is on-site clearing the crash site. Please pass with care and follow directions of contractors. ^IF

    SH1 MANAKAU, SOUTHBOUND – CONGESTION – 3:45 There were reports of a crash between Ohau and #Manakau just before 3pm. The road is now CLEAR but CONGESTION remains. Southbound Manakau queues are currently back to Ohau. Please expect DELAYS as congestion eases. ^CR
    UPDATE 4:15 Our crews are en route to clean up debris on the road, due to this prior #crash near Manakau. Northbound queues through Manakau are currently back to Atkins Rd. Southbound queues in Ohau are back to Boulton Rd. Thanks for your patience. ^EL

    🚨CAR CRASH MANAKAU SH1🚨 Emergency services are in attendance to a 3 car crash (possibly a head on) right outside the Greenery in Manakau (500m north of South Manakau Road) People are trapped in the cars and traffic is extremely affected. Please avoid your travel if possible. Otherwise, use South Manakau Road and the village to bypass the crash site. Serious crash unit and helicopter on way. No deaths at this stage which is great.     23.13: We have clearance Clarence! SH1 at Manakau is now OPEN after a 3 car crash just before 7pm. Somethings gotta be done about the signage on the detours. I feel sorry for those non locals who were led on a wild goose chase and ended up back in Otaki. Thoughts are also with those affected in the crash

    SH1 PEKA PEKA to ŌTAKI, NORTHBOUND – CONGESTION – 12:35 Road users heading northbound can expect significant #delays of between 20 and 30 minutes between Peka Peka and Ōtaki. Drive save. ^RS

    SH1 NORTHBOUND CONGESTION – 11:30 Road users can expect heavy northbound #traffic on SH1 today. There are currently delays from Porirua to Mana and heavy delays between Peka Peka and Otaki. Please account for delays of approximately 45 minutes between Wellington and Levin. ^RS
    UPDATE 1 #Traffic remains heavy from Porirua to Mana and along the coast. There is more heavy congestion further north from Waikanae to Ōtaki. Road users can expect northbound delays of approximately 90 minutes between Wellington and Levin. ^RS
    UPDATE 3:05 Please continue to expect significant northbound DELAYS of approximately 60 minutes between Wellington and Levin on #SH1 this afternoon. Delays from Porirua to Mana and heavy delays between Wakanae and Ōtaki remain. ^CR

    SH1 ŌTAKI – PRIOR CRASH – 3:15PM Due to a prior #crash, there are significant #delays in both directions through Te Horo & Ōtaki. Northbound queues are currently back to Peka Peka, & southbound queues are just beyond Taylors Rd. Please allow extra time for your journey. ^EL

    SH1 ŌTAKI – CRASH – 6:50PM Due to a #crash between the intersections with Te Waka Road and Old Hautere Road, there is STOP/GO management in place and a temporary speed restriction. Please expect #delays ^EL

    This #crash on SH1 is CLEAR and the STOP/GO has been lifted. Congestion has EASED through Ōtaki, but remains HEAVY through Te Horo, especially heading northbound. Please continue to expect #delays. ^EL

    SH1 PAEKAKARIKI TO PUKERUA BAY – SERIOUS CRASH – 11:40AM Due to a serious #crash, the road is currently BLOCKED in both directions. Please delay your travel or seek an alternate route. ^CR
    UPDATE 11:50AM The road remains BLOCKED. Please use Paekakariki Hill Road as a detour route. We will continue to update this post as we receive further information. ^RS
    UPDATE 12:20PM Traffic is now flowing slowly in both directions along the coast. Significant congestion remains for north and southbound traffic. ^RS
    FINAL UPDATE 6:55PM Congestion from this event has now CLEARED. Heavy southbound traffic remains from Raumati to Paekakariki, due to increased holiday traffic.
