Delays and accidents on SH1 between the Ōtaki roundabout and Hokio Beach Road in calendar year 2019

The purpose of this page is to record ‘events’ along SH1 between Ōtaki and Levin, and also nearby, especially through Ōtaki. Several times in 2018 the stretch of road between Waikawa Beach Road and Levin was completely blocked by accidents, several with fatalities. Congestion is an ongoing problem, especially around holidays.

    1:40 PM – 26 Dec 2019 Due to holiday congestion, motorists travelling northbound from Waikanae to Otaki on SH1 can expect delays between 30 to 45 minutes.     2:06 PM – 26 Dec 2019 The northbound congestion from Waikanae to Otaki are now causing delays between 45 to 60 minutes. Motorists are advised to plan their journey accordingly and allow extra time for their travel on this route. ^SJ
    SH1 WAIKANAE TO OTAKI, NORTHBOUND – CONGESTION – UPDATE 1:40 Due to holiday congestion, there are significant #delays on #SH1 between Waikanae & Otaki, with queues on Kapiti Expressway back to Te Moana Rd. Please allow extra time for your journey. ^AP
    UPDATE 3:55PM The #delays between Waikanae & Ōtaki on #SH1 remain significant. Queues on the Kāpiti Expressway remain back to Te Moana Rd. Southbound traffic is now also congested from Ōtaki to Manakau. Allow extra time for your journey.

    SH1 OHAU, MANAWATU-WHANGANUI – SERIOUS CRASH – 2:05 A serious #crash is BLOCKING the road in both directions, north of Kuku Beach Rd. Please consider delaying your travel if possible. We will provide an update when more info is available. ^CR
    UPDATE 2:40 Due to a serious #crash, #SH1 Ohau is CLOSED north of Kuku Beach Rd. There is no detour available. Please avoid the area and delay your travel. ^CR
    UPDATE 3:30 #SH1 Ohau remains CLOSED. A tow is on site for vehicle recovery & crews are working on restoring downed lines. We anticipate the road won’t reopen until later this evening, so please delay travel. Our next update is not due until 7pm. ^CR
    UPDATE 4:55 Following a serious crash, #SH1 Ohau is expected to REOPEN under traffic management by 7pm. The road will CLOSE again by 10pm for full vehicle recovery. Plan ahead and take extra care as heavy traffic is expected once the road reopens. ^CR

    UPDATE 5:25 Due to a serious crash, the road remains CLOSED near Gleeson Road. Detour is via Mokena Kohere St, Toni Taipua St, Manakau heights Dr and South Manakau Rd. Please allow extra time for your journey and plan ahead. ^EH

    UPDATE 4:45 Northbound traffic on SH1 heading up the coast is still HEAVY, but delays have improved slightly. Congestion is easing through Te Horo, but remains slow further north in Ōtaki and further south in Peka Peka. ^EL

    SH1 OTAKI – SERIOUS CRASH – 4:55 The road is currently CLOSED to southbound traffic who are being detoured via Sth Manakau Rd and Waitohu Valley Rd. Please expect major DELAYS through the area and take extra care. ^IF
    UPDATE 5:05 Northbound queues are now impacting traffic past the Otaki shops. Due to the road being CLOSED southbound and DELAYS please avoid the area and delay your journey if possible. ^IF
    UPDATE 5:25 SH1 Otaki remains CLOSED to southbound traffic from South Manakau Rd. Please continue to avoid the area or expect DELAYS on the detour route and if travelling northbound. Tow is currently en route. ^IF

    SH1 MANAKAU TO OHAU – CONGESTION – 1:35 Due to a medical event, the northbound lane is BLOCKED and there are significant delays in both directions. Emergency services and contractors are on site. ^CR
    UPDATE 1:50 Both lanes are now CLEAR on SH1 between Manakau and #Ohau, following a prior medical event. Delays remain but are easing in both directions. ^CR
    UPDATE 2:15 The prior incident on #SH1 south of Ohau is still causing significant northbound DELAYS with queues back to Manakau. Please continue to be patient while the congestion eases. ^IF

    🚨CAR CRASH MANAKAU SH1🚨 Emergency services are in attendance to a 3 car crash (possibly a head on) right outside the Greenery in Manakau (500m north of South Manakau Road) People are trapped in the cars and traffic is extremely affected. Please avoid your travel if possible. Otherwise, use South Manakau Road and the village to bypass the crash site. Serious crash unit and helicopter on way. No deaths at this stage which is great.     23.13: We have clearance Clarence! SH1 at Manakau is now OPEN after a 3 car crash just before 7pm. Somethings gotta be done about the signage on the detours. I feel sorry for those non locals who were led on a wild goose chase and ended up back in Otaki. Thoughts are also with those affected in the crash

    SH1 NORTHBOUND CONGESTION – 11:30 Road users can expect heavy northbound #traffic on SH1 today. There are currently delays from Porirua to Mana and heavy delays between Peka Peka and Otaki. Please account for delays of approximately 45 minutes between Wellington and Levin. ^RS
    UPDATE 1 #Traffic remains heavy from Porirua to Mana and along the coast. There is more heavy congestion further north from Waikanae to Ōtaki. Road users can expect northbound delays of approximately 90 minutes between Wellington and Levin. ^RS
